Instant messaging chat server available to jas.net customers

IM/chat is a fun internet activity but open chat servers can be dangerous. We have a chat server that is available only to jas.net customers. To use it you need to install the Psi software on your computer. You must enter the id of everyone you intend to talk to. Only id's you have entered will be able to talk to you. There is no published user list. You can chat in real time if they are online or leave a message for them if they are offline. This makes it safe and handy for a business, friends or family.
We have a java web applet available here you can use to try it out but for real chatting you need the software. You get the software here. There is also a link on www.jas.net under the software button.

Setup Instructions

Run the downloaded Psi install program. On the first screen, leave the language option on english and click ok. Click next on the Psi info screen. Click I agree on the license screen. On the choose components screen, you might want to uncheck the auto startup option. This way it won't auto run every time you boot up. You will have to click the Psi icon on your desktop to run it. Click next to continue. Leave the install location alone and click install. On the completion screen, uncheck the show readme box and click finish.

The Psi program will then start. You will see a tips screen, the main Psi screen and a signup screen. Close the tips screen to get it out of the way. You need to fill out the add account screen. On the first blank name it jas-chat. If you haven't already setup a chat id on jas.net be sure to check the box REGISTER NEW ACCOUNT. Click the add button to get the account setup screen.

Choose a jas-chat id. This is completely different from your jas.net login and email address. Since this only works internally and is not a email account, you can not be spammed on this. Once you choose a name, enter in the first blank whatever_you_choose@chat.jas.net. Now, choose a chat password and enter it in the password and confirm fields. Leave the proxy and advanced options as is and click the register button. You will either see Account Successfully Registered or a message saying the id is taken. If the id is already taken choose another id and click register again.

Now you have an account properties screen. Leave this up and look at the Psi main screen. On the lower right, change from offline to online. Now back on the account properties screen, click the details tab and the Edit Personal Details button. Fill in your real name. You can fill in any other blanks you want. This info can only be viewed by people on your contact list but just to be safe, I would not fill in the email address or phone number fields. Click publish then close and save. On the main Psi screen you will notice a star blinking. Double click it to see your welcome message from the server. Just click close on this message. Now you are ready to add contacts and start chatting.

Have fun.
