Question:
If I change phone lines will my connection still work ?
Answer:
If you don't go out of our call in area and don't change from a call waiting line to a line without call waiting, the dialup connection will still work the same. If you leave our call in area the call becomes long distance. If you move from a line with call waiting and you have the "disable call waiting" option enabled in your dialup you will get a false busy report. If you don't have call waiting, don't have it enabled in dial properties.
Question:
If someone sends me e-mail and I am not connected will I miss it ?
Answer:
No, the jas.net email server accepts email for you and holds it till you dial in and ask for it.
Question:
Do you have a 56k line ?
Answer:
Yes, we have a "56k" number available to all our customers. The speed you get depends on your modem and the line going to your house. A "clean" phone line and a good v.90 modem should get in the upper 40's or lower 50's connect speed.
Question:
Why does it take me so long to log in ?
Answer:
You have "log onto network" checked in your dialer. Go to my conputer, dialup network. Right click your jas.net dialer and left click properties. Click server types and remove the check from log onto network. Now click ok till you are back to dialup network.
Question:
Why does my connection drop ?
Answer:
There are only two reasons jas.net will drop a connection.
1. If you do nothing for 30 minutes the system assumes you are gone.
2. If you log in more than once with the the same username.
The 30 minute timeout is covered under Pricing and policy. If you do nothing for 30 minutes you are not interactive.
Since each login is a seperate account, logging in twice is either getting two for the price of one or someone else knows your password and is logging in as you. In either case this is not permitted.
If none of the above apply, it has to do with either your phone line or your modem. Many of the new computers have "software modems". This type of modem passes most of the signal processing off to the cpu rather than handling it itself. The winmodems and hcf modems are examples of this. If you don't have at least 75% free resources they will drop a connection. Go to my computer, help, and about windows to check this. If you find that you have less that 75% free, this means that windows has to much running at once. Often people will instal so called "free software" from the internet. Most of this has hidden spy-ware that takes up lots of windows resources. Look under info on the jas.net home page for Spy Ware Removal Tools. Download and run this to remove this spy ware. Many of the so called 56k modems do not properly do v.90 and will drop a connection on the 384 number. You will find these work ok on the 383 number.
The phone line between you and jas.net is a critical link. If it has any noise or distortion your modem will loose sync and drop the line. Check that all the connections on your phone system going to your computer are clean and well connected. Sometimes other telephones on the same line will cause noise on your line. If any other telephones share the line with your computer try disconnecting the other phones. If you have 2 seperate lines in your house try connecting your computer to the other line and see if the problem goes away.
Question:
Why do I have problems every time the lights blink ?
Answer:
When the lights blink at your house it means that a spike has gone threw
your electrical system. Especially on the high speed access, this can cause
your access boxes to loose sync. We recommend a UPS (Uninterruptable Power
Supply) be used on all equiptment at your house.
